Voting Information

  • Under New York law, the school budget vote and election occur on the third Tuesday in May.
  • Polls are open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Raquette Lake Union Free School District (UFSD), located at 115 State Route 28, Raquette Lake.

Running for the Board

Candidates for the office of member of the Board of Education can be nominated by a petition directed to the Clerk of the School District, which is signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the District, or by two percent (2%) of the number of voters who voted in the previous annual election, whichever is greater. Petitions must state the residence of each signer and the name and residence of each candidate.

A Board of Education member of the Raquette Lake UFSD must meet the following qualifications:

  • A citizen of the United States;
  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older;
  • Able to read and write;
  • A legal resident of the District for a continuous and uninterrupted period of at least one (1) year prior to the election;
  • Cannot be an employee of the Raquette Lake UFSD;
  • The only member of his/her family (that is, cannot be a member of the same household) on the Raquette Lake UFSD Board;
  • May not simultaneously hold another incompatible public office, including, but not limited to, Superintendent, clerk, tax collector, treasurer, or librarian, or an employee of the Board.
  • Must not have been removed from a school district office within one (1) year preceding the date of appointment or election to the Board.

In union free school districts, however, a Board member may be appointed Clerk of the Board and of the District.
